Handling the competition amongst women: There will always be someone prettier than you but rest assured that most middle-aged women feel as old as you do!
Have you ever freaked out because you feel as though you will never look as good as all of the beautiful women who are out there? I will be the first to tell you that there is a ton of competition out there for older women, particularly if they find themselves suddenly single in middle age. Jennifer Aniston, and now Courtney Cox, can be perfect examples of how gorgeous woman over forty can be single, ready to mingle, and totally lacking a committed man in their lives for years on end. They can talk about how happy they are being single until they are blue in the face, I won’t believe them for a second.
I think that women are coping with the fierce competition by getting plastic surgery. As for the whole cougar beauty trend, I really think this is a joke of a term and a misnomer. I’d say most women have no interest in being a cougar (I know I don’t) and would vastly prefer being in a committed relationship with an honest and handsome partner close in age. It’s because of the fierce competition in the dating pool that women are dating younger men and unfortunately younger men may be just in it for some fun. Instead of cougar they should call these women desperate because that would be a more honest description. Not everyone is going to land an Ashton Kutcher by venturing out into age gap territory.
Just know that you are not alone. Plenty of women over forty feel as though they are too fat, too ugly, and too old to appeal to, attract, and most importantly keep, their contemporary and even younger counterparts. You can get plastic surgery in an attempt to reverse the clock and it will give your looks a boost and self esteem a shot of adrenaline, but let’s face it, you really aren’t going to become younger chronologically. Plastic surgery can even the playing field to some extent by improving your looks much more than a skin cream can, but looking ten years younger won’t change who you are or where you are at in life.
I personally think that the best approach is to concede that yes there is a lot of competition, but you and a million other women are all facing it. It’s just the way it is. Just deal with it, accept it, and go on about your life. Focus on self-improvement rather than the competition. Improve your own self to the extent you can. Cultivate your looks and keep yourself healthy. If you want a little cosmetic work done, save for it and do it. Get healthy by following a nutritious diet and do exercise to get your body into tip top shape. Look at the competition as a resource of beauty and fashion ideas to learn from. Keep up on beauty tips and read makeup tutorials so that you can apply them to yourself. If you focus on improving yourself and really follow through on it, you’ll be able to see self-improvement gains and that will make you feel beautiful.
Focus on your assets: Make the most of your own looks
Women think that they have to feel good inside, in order to look good on the outside. This is generally true but reverse psychology can also really work magic when it comes to your looks. Try to look good, and believe it or not, you just might feel better as a result of your efforts.
Often times if you are feeling down on your looks it translates over into how you dress and care of yourself. Try to work in reverse. Don’t dress like a slob and let your looks go. Try to primp yourself up a bit. You’d be surprised how much this can help your mood. Take a bath, apply a sunless tan, do your nails and hair at home. Take a daily walk. Apply makeup and wear clothes that fit nicely. All of these things can improve outer looks and consequently lift your inner mood up as well. Remember that saying that when you look good, you feel good? It’s true because I think that taking charge of your beauty and improving it will make you feel better about yourself.
Spend time and money making yourself beautiful
Don’t let yourself go. Women who feel like they can’t compete tend to forego the competition altogether. They remove themselves and make a decision that they don’t care. They focus all of their energy and efforts on other aspects of their lives. They forego trying to look good. You see a mom that is run ragged and totally dedicated to her kids. She’s makeup-less, disheveled, dressing like a slob, looking like she just rolled out of bed and left the house, and over weight. All of her loving effort gets put into other people she cares about leaving nothing for herself.
No matter what anyone tells you, your looks and your health do matter. It may seem superficial but in actuality it is not. If you are looking and feeling your best you are going to be a happier person and that will translate into being a better person to those around you. Total self sacrifice back fires. You get these moms who are so busy that they don’t go in for their yearly physicals, forego their mammograms, and forget about their own existences for the sake of their demanding family lives or career. Women start to put their own health at risk by ignoring their weight and health maintenance appointments. Trust me that you don’t want to ignore your health and skip checkups at this juncture in life because this is the age when early prevention can save you! I see women do everything from blowing their mammogram or pap off to not getting their blood work done regularly. Don’t do this to yourself.
I think it is important to take charge of your own beauty and health and make time for it. Try to focus on all aspects of your appearance. Keep your hair and nails nice, your body hair free, your diet in tact and your exercise regiment consistent. Keep all of your annual doctor appointments on calendar. You can do most of this at home or on your own without having to pay for salon treatments. Wear clothes that fit. Keep your style simple, classy and polished. Invest some money into beauty treatments be they related to diet, exercise, healthy meal plans, hair style, hair removal, wrinkle prevention, whatever.
One last thing is to take everything into consideration. Some women are so concerned about their weight and weight loss that they forget about wearing makeup or nice clothes or presenting themselves in the best light. Everything else gets ignored because they only obsess about one thing which is if only I could lose weight. Try to keep all aspects of your looks and health on the up and up, and invest time and money into yourself. Don’t just focus on one problem (such as weight loss) to the point where everything else falls by the wayside. Keep your eye on the overall picture and the way in which you present yourself.
I hope you enjoy reading my beauty tips for women. Remember to ignore the competition or better yet, learn from it. Focus on self-improvement and making yourself look attractive which should boost your mood. And lastly, don’t forget to devote a certain amount of time and money on your appearance and your general health.
