Women tend to believe that the more expensive the hair product they are using, the better it is for their hair.  Women think they need to buy the most expensive shampoo and the most expensive conditioner. This may or may not be true but I believe that in many cases you could be paying for a lot of hype. Unless you have problematic hair, I do not believe that you need to buy expensive shampoos and conditioners for your hair.  Of course if I had the money to pay the cost, I’d love to be able to afford high end shampoo and conditioner like the type they sell at the beauty supply stores.   But I really don’t have the budget for high end beauty products.  I stick to the drugstore brands because you just save so much money. Drugstore shampoos and conditioners run the gamut from dirt cheap to moderate prices. Some shampoo brands are truly lousy and detergent like, and some work prety well. The key is to keep trying different brands and combinations of shampoo and conditioner until you find what keeps your hair beautiful, healthy, shiny and soft for the lowest amount of money. The less you have to spend on expensive shampoo, the better off you’ll be in terms of saving money on beauty products.

Saving on shampoo and conditioners is definitely worth it, as the extra money you save will accumulate over time.  The caveat is that you have to go through some trial and error to find an inexpensive shampoo/conditioner product that loves your particular hair. Some stores such as Rite Aid have store return policies that if you are unhappy with a beauty product you can return it or exchange it. That could come in handy. If your hair is delicate, fine or problem hair, you may need to try several different brands to find one that you love. For example, I’ve tried White Rain Shampoo, Tresame, Infusium, and Aussie Miracle conditioner (among many others), and did not like them at all. Pantene conditioner is supposed to be very good, but I like Finnesse way better for my particular hair. I do not like Suave Shampoo or Suave Conditioner, but I do like the children’s Suave Two in One Shampoo and Conditioner. Some shampoos left my hair feeling dry and brittle, some left my hair tangled, and some left my hair with residue on it. It all depends on how the product interacts with your particular hair type. The point is that there are so many shampoo brands to try and combine, eventually you could likely find a product that is low cost and effective on your hair type.

Try 2in1 Shampoo and Conditioner as Shampoo for dry hair

I use Suave 2in1 Shampoo to shampoo my hair with.  I really like the fruity smell and it comes in different flavors.  I discovered this shampoo obviously because I have four children and this is what I buy them too.  If you notice it actually includes conditioner, but I use it as just shampoo.  I probably like it for this reason as my hair is naturally dry and the conditioner blended in with the shampoo makes it less drying.  It agrees with my hair.  I’ve tried Tigi bedhead Moisture Maniac and I find the Suave 2in1 to be a cheaper alternative to that shampoo.

Finesse Conditioner with Soy works great for me

For conditioner, I really like Finesse.  I usually buy the texture enhancing one but the other versions of their silk and soy conditioner all work well too.  The finesse conditioner agrees with my hair.  It softens it up but leaves it clean and pretty shiny.  I guess that their product has Silk and Soy proteins that supposedly protect the hair shaft by coating it with the conditioner.  The texture enhancing version of the conditioner works well for me because it gives it an extra boost of conditioning making it soft and manageable but at the same time it rinses off really clean and doesn’t leave any residue.  I like my hair to be really soft and clean but I hate it when conditioners are so softening that they leave a gummy coating on the hair.  I don’t like any residue.  I like the fact that I can use a lot of conditioner and slather it on without having to conserve it because of its price.  I have really long thick hair so I need a lot of product.

Obviously if I could afford Keil’s silk groom or other high end hair shampoo and conditioner products I would go for it but I don’t have the money.  I am not recommending the Suave 2 in 1 and Finesse per se, as it works well for my particular hair and might not work well for someone else.  Considering that my hair is very dry and course naturally, and that I play around with the color and bleach the roots periodically, and that I never go into a hair salon, my hair is in pretty good condition and it’s long too.  All things considered I think I am doing okay and I stick to the little magic suave 2in1 shampoo/finesse conditioner combination that works for me.  My two girls are blond and have finer hair (baby fine blond) than I do and both of them like Herbal Essence shampoo and conditioner for their hair.

Try Drug Store Shampoo and Conditioner instead of the Beauty Supply. The beauty supply store will cost you an arm and a leg

If you experiment with a few of the well known drugstore brands you can find the right combination.  Don’t give up.  Once you find a winning drugstore combination for shampoo and conditioner, you are set!  If it works well you can avoid the beauty supply and save a ton of money over time.  Beauty supply products can cost $30-$40 for shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 months where as with inexpensive drugstore products you stand a chance of coming in under $10 for both like I do.  You could potentially save hundreds of dollars every single year in shampoo and conditioner costs alone.

Only pay for high end beauty products if you can’t live without them. Some products are so good they just can’t be approximated by cheaper versions.

Some women have really problematic hair and so if you find a more expensive product that is the only thing that really works then obviously you have to take that into consideration.  Maybe you need to put alot of money into your hair because your hair seriously needs it.  But if you can, keep trying different inexpensive shampoos and conditioners periodically because some of them will be horrible for sure but eventually you may just find the right brand and combination that works.  If you are really lucky you will find a shampoo and conditioner that you can pick up at the market too.  If you can get your brand of shampoo/conditioner at your super market it also saves you the trip to the drugstore.
