My top makeup tip for an older woman is to choose solid neutral (as opposed to pale) makeup colors. I am tempted to use the word natural to describe the makeup colors I like. But I can’t use the word natural because many women think natural means really invisible. Women think of the natural look and then get makeup that is almost too natural and light beige and it doesn’t bring life to their mature face. The colors need to stand out just a little bit. I only like natural colors that have a rich earthy tone – more like solid neutral. I think women get makeup that is too natural and pale and it is too bare. It really doesn’t make their face look vibrant and alive. I am showing a strong neutral color palette that flatters an older face and makes it look clean, fresh and youthful.
I love selecting makeup color palettes and have found that strong neutrals work best to make a mature woman’s skin look flawless. I picked out what I think are some pretty color examples that I think are superior for flattering a mature face. This makeup look I am demonstrating is a simple classic look and you can see the makeup result in the photograph. I think for my age that this look makes my skin look smooth and flawless, all things considered.
Use concealer as the first step to hide dark areas
The first essential to mature makeup is to apply a light concealer (I recommend lighter than your natural skin tone). I find that this helps diminish the dark bags, uneven colorations and skin flaws that we have. I actually like when the concealer lightens the face slightly, and makes everything more evened out like a matte canvas.
Use a small amount of liquid, then powder foundation
Then I like a liquid makeup next in a tone that matches very closely to your natural skin color or even a teensy bit darker. I like a touch of liquid foundation because it gives a soft dewey look to the skin and the powder looks better over it. After that I like to use compact with a more earth tan hue to it which gives the skin a light healthy color. You can also use loose earth tan colored powder. I prefer a compact over loose powder if I am already dressed because loose powder makes more of a mess. Make sure the makeup is blending in nicely at each step.
Try brown toned eye shadow which will bring out your eyes
For eye shadow I like strong neutrals with the darkest color on the eyelid going towards the outside part of the lids. The biggest mistake is that women use too light of a beige which does nothing to make the eyes pop. Go for a darker earthy tan or brown tone. I’ve played around quite a bit with putting shadow in the crease and above it on the brow bone, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to the conclusion that a strong neutral color on the eyelid itself is really the most important thing. And, in fact, if you go too heavy in the crease and high up on the shadow it can actually make your face look older than it is. I like to keep the makeup clean and simple.
Pencil in the eyebrows with a light or medium brown pencil
I like a brown or light brown pencil to fill in the eyebrows and make sure they are there and framing the eyes nicely. The eyebrow shape is a matter of preference but just make sure the eyebrows show a little bit and act as a nice frame for bringing your eyes out.
For evening line the inner lower eyelid rim with brown or black pencil
I like black or brown eyeliner on the inner rim of the lower eyelid. Don’t line your entire upper and lower lid with eyeliner because it will make your eye look too closed in. If you like to line your eyes with an eye pencil be sure to do it only towards the outside of the eye (which I think is more youthful looking). I hate eyeliner all the way over the whole top eyelid on women as it gives beady eyes that are not attractive. If you line the upper eyelids, stay close to the lashes and just do the liner on the outside corners (e.g. starting from the middle to the edge of the eye).
Wear mascara!
Mascara is essential and looks great on older women because it brings out the eyes. I would put on two coats of it. I put on one coat and then use an eyelash curler and then I put a second coat on. I see many women with beautiful eyes and they just get washed out into their face. Wearing mascasa is really important because it makes you eyes pop and that will make you look really pretty.
Wear lip gloss
Finally, I love clear lip gloss on the lips, letting the natural lip color shine through. The best look to the lips is a nude one. But you want the lips to show and you can do this by putting gloss on them. I wear lipstick less and less because I have realized that the combination of making the eyes pop with brown shadow and mascara, combined with natural looking lips, is the most flattering to the mature face.
