More ladies fashion do’s and don’t for women after 40
This article will touch on a few common fashion and style mistakes that women are making after forty. These are definitely mistakes that I too made for many years. I am guilty as charged but have really overhauled the way that I dress these days. It was not until I started looking at hundreds of photographs a day that I caught on to these fatal fashion faux pas. I can catch them from a mile away now, but I could not see it before. For years I was stuck in the fashion faux pas land. I can’t believe some of the stuff I wore, even on this web site.
There is something going on that is a major factor influencing these fashion disasters. It’s the fact that women look better than ever as they age. Women over forty and fifty are taking care of their bodies, going after plastic surgery, getting injections, risking mommy makeovers and even dating younger men. That being said, sometimes we mature women start to get deluded and think we are twenty years younger than we are. This age inappropriate dressing and buying age inappropriate trendy clothes is what leads to big, big fashion mistakes. Just because you have the body of a twenty something year old does not mean you should be wearing the clothes of a twenty something year old.
My biggest problem was that I still fit into the clothes I wore in college so I just continued to wear them to save money. At a certain point in time though, it’s no longer age appropriate and you have to start giving clothes to good will even if technically they still fit. You’d be amazed what a new pair of jeans can do for your looks. In this god awful economy clothes are cheap. A few new items periodically will keep your look polished and fresh. When the elastic is no longer connected to the bra or underwear and the under wire has become a spear, it’s time to get rid of it.
As you age no matter how thin you are you will not be able to hide all the signs of getting older. When you couple natural aging, with age inappropriate clothes, you look like you are an old lady trying too hard to look young. Just because you can fit into it, or flaunt it, doesn’t mean that you should. Let’s go through the photo examples above to see some of the alarmingly common fashion no-no’s.
Fashion disasters and faux pas after 40, shown at photo left
Look all at the left at the fashion faux pas examples. Starting at top left you see a woman showing too much cleavage to the point where the bottom of her bra shows. Her figure is stunning however it’s too much. Just to the right another stunning women however she is showing a low cut zip up top coupled with a midriff baring short top and peek-a-boo tattoos showing. It’s too much. Don’t do a cleavage top that’s also a midriff top because its going to make you look like you shopped in the juniors section. A young guy will pass you on the street, do a double take, and then freak out when he sees you are an old lady he-he. Her figure is awesome but she can tone it down. Flaunting tattoos after forty when you needn’t is also not the best fashion decision.
Moving on, look at these incredible knock out figures in the club dresses. The only problem is that they look like club dresses for a twenty year olds night out in Hollywood. It’s not really the look of a beautiful women. The purple stripes and animal print are too suggestive as is the dress with the see through breast cutout. Zebra print teenage tops are also out. I actually own one that I was fond of and had to get rid of it when I realized it looked absurdly zany on a woman pushing fifty.
Now lets look at the center under the don’t. These girls have awesome figures but the rip top jeans, jean mini vest, and jean micro mini skirt replete with frayed bottom are examples of clothes that aren’t going to be age appropriate for older women. Leave the daisy dukes and cowboy hats in the trailer park and keep yourself away from the trashier looks. Another no go is the naval jewelry and belly chains and personality tattoos. That’s some awesome abs she has but better left off a forty something year old. As for the Halloween stripper costume, another no-no. Having some fun on the Holidays and squeezing into a costume is fine, just don’t go over the top Hollywood Boulevard special on it.
At the middle left shows the last few fashion faux pas worthy of mention. Beautifully enhanced women get a bit tempted to flaunt their perfect chests. Be careful because it can look like you are only interested in one thing. Try to tone it down. Also, showing bra straps can make you look sloppy. Try to replace bras when they get old, check straps to make sure they aren’t twisted or showing, and invest in a few strapless and halter back bras to wear under shirts so that they don’t show. The neater and classier your look as you get on in age, the better off you’ll be. These ladies on the left all have absolutely great figures there is no doubt about it. But they could be getting diminished returns by flaunting it with overkill. If they tone it down (see right) they will actually look more gorgeous. Remember that your clothes should enhance your natural beauty not attract attention to the zany patterns and exposed fabrics of the clothes themselves.
Fashion do’s shown at photo right, these women are in style
After looking to the left check out the right side of this photo which shows examples of more age appropriate clothing that still shows plenty of sex appeal. The camel is a do and he can wear plaid better than the club girls can, so darling. Now, to the right are dress examples. These are pretty, they show off the womens figures without drawing attention to themselves. The black one is feminine with a sexy neck design and cinched waist, and the gray classic wrap dress hugs curves just right. Going clockwise the black top has sheer sleeves which is sexier in my opinion than the sheer midriff and cleavage don’t. Also look at the neat look with the purple top and black Capri pants. She shows her fantastic slim figure without flaunting it.
At bottom is a black V-neck top with the right amount of cleavage. A classic V-neck is always sexy and slenderizing, and look you can’t see the bra straps hanging out. The white and blue jeans photos show a casual look that is polished and nevertheless sexy. Guess what, no rips or frays! The woman in the white jeans shows her fantastic curves without having to expose skin.
What you can get from these fashion do’s are that when in doubt, stick to basic colors. Solid colors are safest as they tend to look classier as well as more figure flattering. Try to find clothes that fit well and show your shape without showing too much skin. If you are going to accentuate your best feature, focus on one thing to showcase. Don’t show cleavage, midriff and legs all together. Keep bra straps hidden and neat. Buy fresh jeans for a more polished look that is age appropriate. I hope you loved these tips.
