Liposculpture
I’ve been seeing a designer plastic surgery term thrown around lately called liposculpture so I decided to investigate and figure out why some surgeons are calling lipo liposculpture instead of using the regular term liposuction. There are implied differences between the two, yet it varies from surgeon to surgeon and city to city.
I personally view liposculpture as somewhat of a plastic surgeons “sale-pitch”. It means different things to different plastic surgeons of course. But to me it just means liposuction on a woman who is in pretty good shape already, and who needs less fat removed enabling smaller instruments to be used, less invasion and sometimes a faster recovery time. It also implies that body fat might be transferred to difference areas to sculpt her body shape.
Liposculpture usually means minimal liposuction of targeted specific areas to create and enhance ideal body curves plus possible fat transfer of the removed fat into other areas to sculpt and enhance other areas in need of plumping. Liposculpture sounds catchier and more appealing than saying it like this: liposuction surgery plus body fat transfer surgery.
Liposculpture implies fine tuning and smoothing verses more removing of loads of fat
Liposuction is commonly understood as suction assisted fat removal from the body. Fat is being removed from specific places on the woman’s body. The more shi-shi term liposculpture implies a more cutting edge fine tuning of an otherwise athletic shaped body so as to give the body final touches that make it more curvy, perfected and womanly.
Liposculpture implies that the surgeon will “sculpt” new body contours
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, lipectomy or simply lipo, implies a basic suction removal of excess stubborn fat from the body. On the other hand, liposculpture often implies a cosmetic surgery procedure in which fat is not only removed, but also transplanted from one spot on the body to another. The surgeon is essentially allowed to “sculpt” new body contours. Common places that fat gets re-injected into are the face (to fill in wrinkles and add volume), lips (to enlarge thin lips) and buttocks (to increase roundness). The sculpture term implies taking fat from one place and putting it into another to re-sculpt the womans body shape.
Liposculpture sometimes implies minimal downtime
Liposculpture often implies that fat will be removed using less invasive methods wherein general anesthesia (which causes a majority of surgery complications) is often not needed. Sometimes a milder twilight sedation is used instead. It also implies more minimal scarring and downtime for the woman. Without the general anesthesia the patient need not have a hospital stay for the procedure. Whereas a more major liposuction surgery requires 5-7 days recovery time, liposculpture can have a shorter recovery time as little as 1-3 days. A compression garment must still be worn for up to six weeks in either case.
I personally believe that liposuction, or liposculpture the designer name for liposuction, is major surgery any which way you slice it. Granted you might be taking less fat out. Maybe some women can tolerate the procedure without general anesthesia. But I still think liposculpture is a designer name for what is still a pretty big plastic surgery. And if they add fat transfer to the procedure, that is another part of the body that has to recover. Older, mature women are hit way harder by something like lipo than the younger set. I don’t believe that liposculpture is any kind of lunch time walk in walk out pain free procedure! FYI.
Liposculpture implies that less fat is removed than with liposuction
Liposculpture implies that ideal candidates are in good health and furthermore within 10-20 pounds of their ideal weight. The areas addressed are minimal pockets of fat deposits that have not responded to diet or exercise. Smaller instruments are thus used, less fat is generally taken out, and the surgery is more fine tuned.
Liposculpture implies tumescent liposuction
Liposuction is sometimes used as a synonym for tumescent liposuction. I’ll go over tumescent lipo in more detail in a follow on blog post. A tumescent solution which is a mixture of lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into tiny incisions under the skin which swells the area and loosens fat tissue before it is sucked out. The suction instrument is also a smaller cannula called a microcannula which is small like the size of a straw. Liposculpture is often differentiated from traditional liposuction because of the use of the tumescent solution and a smaller, less invasive liposuction instrument.
