I think every woman past forty knows what it’s like to have to buy a dress or outfit for an important event.  For many, they’ve been largely ignoring their clothes for some time.  Suddenly, they have to look good for an event and there will be photos.  In my case, my mother’s 80th birthday bash instilled such stress upon her four daughters, the party planners.  Needless to say we all found dresses to wear but it required some shopping. 

The Little Black Dress

For a class reunion or cruise ship is the little black cocktail dress more amazing?  If you had a great figure what type of dress would you buy for yourself.  You have heard of the quintessential little black cocktail dress, cut simply and short, made famous by fashion designer Coco Chanel.  This classy little black dress is considered to be an essential timeless wardrobe item.  Elegant and timeless, it is supposed to be flattering on any age woman. 

I purchased the black dress you see above when I was in my twenties, over two decades ago, and I still have it, believe it or not.  Too bad I did not have the string of pearls to complete the look!  I have put the classic black dress into a tough competition with the sexy halter mini dress.  Both dresses were a bargain and both only cost me less than thirty dollars.

I must make a confession that I have worn the little black dress more than the brightly colored dress.  When I purchased the brightly colored dress I was thinking that it would be great for a hot date.  However, when I went to put it on one evening for just that, I ended up making a decision not to wear it.  While it looks sexy, I honestly felt a little bit on the slinky side and was actually feeling a little like it was too racy for a date.  I’ve never worn the colored dress out, ever. It would be prettier if it was all purple and black, or all green and black (but not both colors at once!)  I think I made the right decision not to wear it and would probably do the black one instead (or buy a new dress).  For a New Years party or a wild club night in Vegas, it would be more appropriate.  For a date it is just too much. 

Funny that the plain black dress is sexier.  Let me talk about this little black dress for just a moment.  This dress, to me, is entirely versatile yet a tad boring.  As far as black dresses go, I don’t think it is a suberb one.  I like the deep V-neck details, but something is missing.  If I were to buy a new black dress, I would look for a little bit more unique detailing on the dress or styling than the one I’ve shown here.  For one thing, the material is so slinky that it makes me look rather shapeless and too thin. The dress itself also needs a little bit more pizazz.  Like, maybe a belt, or more detail at the chest or sleeve, or a different fabric.  It is almost too simple.  I like the length and simplicity but it could definitely use something that makes it unique.  Another way I think it would have looked better would have been to add some jewelry to it, maybe a silver necklace and bracelets.  It needs something added as it is almost too plain.

The moral to this story is that the little black dress is a versatile classic and every woman should have one in her closet.  In a pinch, the black dress seems to fit every occasion and can be used as your backup if you don’t have time or inclination (or money) to buy a new dress for an impending event.  Conversely, the colorful dress would probably only be appropriate for Vegas type action.  Which dress do you think has more glamour and looks more attractive on this mature woman?   Is the woman on the left more beautiful in a sexy dazzling dress, or the woman on the right in a timeless classic?  Which looks more youthful to you?
