Mature Makeup Secret #1: Make sure you wear enough makeup yet choose natural looking colors
There was a time (decades ago) that you could brush pressed powder on your face, dash on a little mascara and lip gloss, and head right out the door. Ah, to be younger again. I hate to shatter your dreams but those days are gone. If you are pushing fifty and try the nude look, you will probably look more like a tired washed out hag. You need the makeup when you are pushing fifty years old, plain and simple. The Hollywood trick is to pick natural colors so that the makeup does what it is supposed to do without looking totally phony. The natural colors help hide the fact that the makeup is on your skin. Earthy toned colors look great and are safer and easier to go with than bright or frosty colors.
Mature Makeup Secret #2: Get a uniform all over foundation look that gives an even sunkissed glow
Before putting makeup on always wash your face and then put a small amount of thick moisturizer on which will give your final look a hydrated instead of dry effect. Always invest in a good concealor and cover facial flaws before applying foundation. Choose a foundation that is infinitesimally darker than your skin tone. That will give you a slight sun kissed tan look and puts some life back into your old and tired face.
Mature Makeup Secret #3: Avoid blush and use a tan natural loose or pressed powder if anything at all, keeping it away from the center of the face
Check the mirror and go over the result with a pressed or loose powder in a teensy darker hue than the foundation. Avoid cheek blush and just use the tan powder instead yet make sure to blend, blend, and blend. If you can’t blend your checks avoid powder altogether and just stick with the all over matte foundation look.
Avoid getting the powder to close in to the very center of the face near the eyes, nose, and mouth areas. Take it more in a circle around the outside of the face instead. This is demonstrated clearly in the Jill Goodacre picture at top center. If you drew a line right down the middle of her face you would see that she has not put any dark powder in the middle of her face. This opens up her face and makes her look brighter and younger.
Mature Makeup Secret #4: Define the eyes making them the central feature of the face
Always try to make the eyes the main center point of your face for an anti aging effect. You can neatly line the inside lower rim with black and the outside upper lid with black. Make the line very thin. You can line the whole eye like Audrina Patridge or Jill Goodacre, keep towards the outside half like Elizabeth Hurley and Kate Beckinsale, or just do the very outside corner like Angie Everhart and Gweneth Paltrow. Put on a few applications of mascara to make eyes pop. Define the eyelids with a natural color eyeshadow just a smidge darker than the foundation color you used.
Mature Makeup Secret #5: Keep the lips nude to minimize thinning lips
Use a minimum amount of natural lip color, in fact a good lip gloss with nude lip liner is really all you need. If you have super natural plumped lips you can showcase them a tad more like Jessica Biel. But most mature women’s lips are on the thinner side so keep the lip color really light like Demi Moore if one or both of your lips are thin. You should lightly pencil in your eyebrows using a light brown shade that matches your brows in order to define them and frame the eyes. If you really want the nature girl look you can leave the eyebrows light like Gweneth does however notice that she has the pretty blue eyes and can get away with it. In general it’s good to pencil in the eye brows just slightly in order to define them, frame the eyes, and draw the attention upward.
Wear makeup, just choose colors that give you the skin glow and eye definition you need while still looking natural and earthy overall
Remember that as a mature woman, you should not go for a total nude look. Too little or too light makeup is not going to do much for an aging face. Even Gweneth Paltrow has some serious foundation on her giving her that sun kissed “I’m not wearing any makeup” illusion. Trust me, she’s wearing it. You definitely need the makeup and good coverage with it in order to look younger. You have to smooth out and cover the uneven skin, and draw attention to the eyes. It takes makeup. But to counteract the makeup so that it still looks natural, choose the right colors. Choose earthy clean colors that aren’t too pale. Give yourself a healthy glow with the makeup and accent your eyes. You need the makeup to look younger, yet choose the colors that still make it look natural.
